Central Valley / KSCK

Aircraft detailing at Stockton (KSCK).

The Central Valley does different damage than the bay. Instead of salt, Stockton aircraft fight agricultural dust, hard water spotting and the kind of summer UV load that turns good paint chalky in a few seasons.

Detailing at KSCK

Dust, hard water, and sun.

KSCK has a 10,245 foot main runway and a 4,448 foot secondary, Atlantic Aviation on the FBO side, maintenance operations on the field, and a mixed population that runs from owner-flown pistons through turboprops, cargo aircraft and agricultural operators. It is also in the middle of one of the most productive farming regions in the country, and that shows up on airplanes.

Three problems specific to the Valley

The first is agricultural dust. Fine particulate settles on every horizontal surface, and the mistake owners make is wiping it off dry. Dry-wiping dust is how you put swirl marks into paint, and it is the most common self-inflicted damage we correct.

The second is hard water. Central Valley water carries a heavy mineral load, so a hose wash that dries in the sun leaves mineral deposits bonded to the paint. Over a season those deposits etch. Our process is rinsless and does not leave standing water on the airframe, which removes the problem rather than managing it.

The third is UV. Valley summers deliver more direct sun hours at higher temperatures than the coast, and UV is what breaks down clear coat and oxidizes single-stage paint. A tie-down aircraft at Stockton ages faster on paint than the same aircraft on the Peninsula, even though the Peninsula aircraft has the corrosion problem.

What we recommend at Stockton

Regular exterior care to keep dust off without dry-wiping, and a UV-resistant sealant or ceramic coating as the actual defense against oxidation. Coating is a better fit in the Valley than most places because the failure mode here is UV rather than salt, and that is exactly what a coating is good at slowing. Aircraft already showing chalk need paint correction before any protection goes on, because coating over oxidized paint just locks it in.

Interiors take the heat too

Cabin temperatures in a closed aircraft on a Stockton ramp in July are brutal on leather, plastics and headliners. Conditioning leather before it cracks costs a fraction of replacing a seat, and it is the part of the airplane owners notice last. See interior detailing.

Working at the field

We come to the hangar or tie-down. No water hookup, no wash rack, no runoff. Summer work gets scheduled early morning or evening, because detailing a hot airframe in direct sun produces a worse result no matter who is doing it.

Common Questions

Stockton questions.

Why is hard water a problem for aircraft paint?

Central Valley water carries a high mineral load. When a wet wash dries in the sun, the minerals stay behind and bond to the paint. Repeated over a season, those deposits etch the surface and need machine polishing to remove. A rinsless process avoids it entirely because the airframe is never left with standing water.

Should I wipe dust off my airplane between washes?

Not dry. Dry-wiping dust drags grit across the paint and puts in swirl marks, which is the most common avoidable paint damage we see on Valley aircraft. If you are going to wipe, use a proper detail spray and a clean microfiber, and change towels often.

Is ceramic coating worth it in the Central Valley?

For an aircraft that lives outside at Stockton, generally yes, because the failure mode here is UV oxidation and that is what a coating slows most effectively. For an aircraft that lives in a hangar and flies under fifty hours a year, the case is much weaker. Our ceramic coating guide goes through the math.

Do you serve Tracy, Lodi and the Delta as well?

Yes. Stockton is our Central Valley anchor and we work the surrounding fields and Delta area from the same trips. See our service area.

Other fields we cover: Livermore KLVK, Hayward KHWD, Concord KCCR, San Carlos KSQL, Palo Alto KPAO, San Jose KSJC, Oakland KOAK, Stockton KSCK. See the full service area.
