Peninsula / KSQL

Aircraft detailing at San Carlos (KSQL).

San Carlos sits five feet above sea level with the bay a few hundred yards off the end of the runway. That location is hard on paint, and it is the main reason KSQL aircraft need a different wash schedule than inland fields.

Detailing at KSQL

Salt air is the real problem here.

KSQL has a field elevation of about 5 feet and sits directly on the San Francisco Bay shoreline. Aircraft parked there collect airborne salt every day they are outside, and salt does not just sit on the surface. It draws moisture, works into seams, lap joints, fastener heads and control surface hinges, and starts corrosion under paint that looks fine from ten feet away.

Hangar space on the Peninsula is scarce and expensive, so a large share of the based fleet lives on the ramp. If your aircraft is tied down at San Carlos, the wash interval that keeps a Livermore or Tracy aircraft looking good is not enough. What matters is rinsing the salt load off before it has time to work, not waiting until the airplane looks dirty.

What we do differently at San Carlos

Our exterior work at KSQL puts the emphasis on decontamination rather than shine. That means a full surface wash including the belly and the areas most owners skip, attention to seams, fasteners, gear wells and the trailing edges where salt collects, and a sealant or ceramic coating that gives the paint a barrier between washes. Static ports, pitot tubes, vents and antennas get masked before any water touches the airframe.

Short runway, light fleet

Runway 12/30 is 2,621 by 75 feet. That length shapes the based fleet toward piston singles and light twins, with training aircraft from the flight clubs and schools on the field making up a large share of movements. High-utilization trainers get dirty faster and get washed less, which is exactly the combination that produces chalky, oxidized paint after a few Bay Area summers. Our paint correction service is built for that airframe.

Fleet and club aircraft

Flight schools, clubs and partnerships based at KSQL can put recurring care on a schedule instead of calling when the airplane looks bad. A fleet that presents well rents more hours and holds value better at sale. Ask about fleet arrangements when you request a quote.

Working around the field

We coordinate ramp or hangar access with the FBO or your hangar landlord before the visit. Our rinsless process needs no water hookup, no runoff containment and no wash rack, so we can work at a tie-down without a dedicated wash area. San Carlos is noise sensitive and busy, so we schedule around the field rather than expecting it to schedule around us.

Common Questions

San Carlos questions.

How often should an aircraft based at San Carlos be washed?

More often than an inland aircraft. For a tied-down aircraft at KSQL we generally suggest an exterior wash every four to six weeks, with a full detail two to three times a year. A hangared aircraft can stretch that, but salt still gets in on every flight and every tow. See our guide on detailing frequency.

Do you need a wash rack or water hookup?

No. We use a rinsless process, so there is no runoff and no hookup required. That is what makes working at a San Carlos tie-down possible at all.

Can you apply a ceramic coating at KSQL?

Yes, but coating work needs hangar or covered space for application and cure. If you do not have hangar access at San Carlos we can coordinate a location or schedule the work at another field.

Will detailing remove existing corrosion?

No. Detailing removes the contaminants that cause corrosion and makes existing corrosion visible so your mechanic can address it. Anything structural is a maintenance item, not a detailing item.

Other fields we cover: Livermore KLVK, Hayward KHWD, Concord KCCR, San Carlos KSQL, Palo Alto KPAO, San Jose KSJC, Oakland KOAK, Stockton KSCK. See the full service area.
